SINGAPORE, 29 April 2016 – Singapore Changi Airport handled 4.90 million passenger movements in March, an 8.1% year-on-year increase. Aircraft movements were 4.6% higher at 30,130 landings and takeoffs, while cargo shipments increased 5.2% to reach 171,180 tonnes, compared to the same period last year.

Passenger traffic during the month was boosted by continued broad-based growth. In particular, Thailand, Malaysia and China registered double-digit increases for the third consecutive month. All of Changi Airport’s top 10 country markets grew by at least 4%.

For the first quarter of 2016, Changi Airport registered 14.4 million passengers, 9.9% higher than during the same period last year. Double-digit growth was registered for South East Asia, North East Asia, South Asia and the Middle East & Africa. Bangkok moved to the top of the cities list, accounting for over a million passenger movements. For the quarter, aircraft movements rose 5.6% to 88,790, while airfreight movements registered an increase of 3.3%, totalling 465,140 tonnes.

As at 1 April 2016, more than 100 airlines operate at Changi Airport, connecting Singapore to some 330 cities in about 80 countries and territories worldwide. With more than 6,800 weekly scheduled flights, an aircraft takes off or lands at Changi roughly once every 90 seconds.

Other highlights at Changi*

New Services – Changi Airport welcomed new services and increased service frequencies for the Northern Summer 2016 season which began in late March.

On 6 April, Changi’s first direct air link to Fiji was established, with Fiji Airways operating a twice-weekly service between Singapore and Nadi. Indonesian flag carrier Garuda commenced its new 5x weekly service to London-Heathrow (one-way) with a transit stop at Changi Airport on 31 March. The Heathrow-Jakarta leg is a non-stop service.

New Stores – In the public areas, Korean fashion brand Redeye commenced operations at Terminal 3’s Basement Two. In the transit areas, Bottega Veneta and Garrett Popcorn opened in Terminal 2, while airport spa service Be Relax opened its first Asia outlet in Terminal 3.
